Emmanuel Music: Abduction from the Seraglio

A big Mozart opera! What could be more fun?

Emmanuel Music will present this Opera-in-Concert. In this colorful opera that "knocked everything else sideways," as the poet Goethe boldly remarked, Mozart tells the story of a kidnapping by pirates, a Turkish harem, a clever quest, a quartet of lovers, and unwavering loyalty. Infused with Emmanuel Music’s acclaimed virtuosity and innovation, this enduring opera in concert will be sung in German with English dialogue.

Pre-concert conversation at 6:45 PM with Dr. Elizabeth Seitz

Perhaps Haydn's greatest work, Creation is a sprawling oratorio tackling, you know, the creation of the world. No big deal. H+H has assembled an outstanding trio of soloists, and this big work features plenty of opportunity for the choir and orchestra to shine.

Two performances:

  • Friday May 1, 7:30pm at Symphony Hall

Musicians of the Old Post Road: Ariadne auf Naxos

This regional premiere of Benda’s 1775 setting of the Greek myth written in the rare melodrama form—sometimes referred to as “opera without singing”—features the Old Post Road ensemble and actors Marya Lowry and Robert Walsh, founding members of the Actors' Shakespeare Project. A riveting instrumental score and spoken drama (in English) combine to portray the tale of love and loss, destiny and tragedy, lived by Ariadne and Theseus on the island of Naxos. Mozart was said to have loved this work. You will, too!

Program also showcases a flute concerto and trio sonata by Benda.

Two performances:
April 11, 7:30pm, Washburn Hall at Mechanics Hall, 321 Main St, Worcester
April 12, 4pm, Modern Theatre at Suffolk University, 525 Washington St., Boston

The few gentle snowflakes felt in Steve Reich’s “Duet” soon gain intensity and develop into a full-blown blizzard of sound.. But as cold as it may be, once you find your way inside, a raucous party awaits – with a pretty stellar live band, of course!

A Far Cry: Obsession

A Far Cry’s first all-Baroque concert explores the forbidden territory of obsession, fixing its gaze relentlessly on whatever subject it touches. Vivaldi’s warnings against worldly indulgence in “Nulla” are thoroughly ignored as the warlike sounds of Meder’s “Battaglia” fill the air, as Armida suffers from love’s agony, and as the craziness of “La Folia”’s repetition takes hold. The luminous Amanda Forsythe is guest artist in cantatas by Vivaldi and Handel.

  • Johann Meder: Battaglia
  • Antonio Vivaldi: Nulla in mundo pax sincera
  • Johann Meder: Sonata “Der polnische Pracher”
  • Georg Frideric Handel: Armida Abbandonata
  • Antonio Vivaldi: La Folia

Featuring Amanda Forsythe, soprano
